3 tb Shortening

2 tb Butter

2/3 c Sugar

1/2 ts Vanilla

1 c Flour

1 1/2 ts Baking powder

1/2 ts Salt

1/3 c Milk

4 Egg whites; stiffly beaten

Frosting of choice Cream shortening, butter and sugar until light. Add vanilla and mix well. Sift flour with baking powder and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beating after each addition. Gently fold in egg whites. Turn into greased and lightly floured 9-inch round layer cake pan and bake at 375F 18 to 20 minutes, or until cake springs back when lightly touched.
