3/4 c Shortening

1 c Sugar

3/4 c Brown sugar; firmly packed

3 Eggs

2 1/4 c All-purpose flour

1 ts Baking powder

3/4 ts Baking soda

1/2 ts Salt

3/4 ts Ground cinnamon

3/4 ts Ground cloves

1 c Buttermilk

1 ts Vanilla extract

Spiced buttercream frosting ; see recipe for Recipe by: Southern Living

Cream shortening; gradually add sugars, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine flour and next 5 ingredients. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix just until blended after each addition. Stir in vanilla. Grease two 9-inch round cakepans, and line with wax paper; grease wax paper. Pour batter into prepared pans; bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes; remove from pans, and let cool completely on wire racks. Spread frosting between layers SUGAR n’ SPICE CUPCAKES: Spoon batter into paper-lined muffin pans, filling each cup half full. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Remove from pans, and let cool on wire racks. Frost with Spiced Buttercream Frosting. —–
