1 c Shortening; soft

1 c Granulated sugar

1 c Brown sugar, firmly packed

2 Eggs

1/2 ts Vanilla

1 1/4 c Sifted all-purpose flour

1 ts Soda

1/2 ts Salt

3 c Quaker Oats, uncooked

— (quick or old-fashioned) Beat shortening, sugars, eggs and vanilla together until creamy. Sift together flour, soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture; blend well. Stir in oats. Shape to form 1-inch balls. Place on greased cooky sheets, about 2 inches apart. Bake in preheated moderate oven (350 F.) 12 to 15 minutes. Cool about 2 minutes, then remove cookies from cooky sheets. For variety, add 1 cup raisins, 1 cup salted peanuts, 6 oz. (1 cup) semi-sweet chocolate pieces or 1 cup flaked or shredded coconut with the oats.
